  • How was the ukulele invented?

"In 1879 the Portuguese farmer immigrants from the island of Madeira brought their small guitar like four stringed "machete" to Hawaii. When they happily played their machete it reminded the Hawaiians of a small hopping or jumping flea; about 1890 the Hawaiians named the instrument "ukulele", which means "jumping flea" in the Hawaiian language. The Portuguese changed the "machete", designing and tuning the four-string ukulele as a subset of the classic guitar. It is now named the ukulele, uke, ukelele, or banjo-ukulele."
